How can someone with only a limited amount of space, time, and resources possibly begin to grow their own food?

Container Gardens!

What exactly is a container garden?

These can be described in many ways, but are essentially gardens that are grown in containers and vessels that are big enough and deep enough to provide a suitable replacement for the natural soil and garden environment.

Is it hard to start container gardening?

Absolutely not!  Without any experience, gardening knowledge, or the proverbial green thumb, you can start growing all kinds of delicious foods. Whether you have a tidy little back yard, or you are an urban dweller with only a few large and sunny windows, you can start growing vegetables, herbs, and a few fruits that can supply you with at least a bit of your own food supply.

Why start container gardening?

Not only will these foods taste better that you grow on your own, but they are going to be more nutritious due to their freshness and lack of commercial pesticides, fertilizers, and irradiation treatments. They will also save you a lot more money than you might think, and will probably green up your diet a great deal more too.

What types of containers can I use to start gardening?

Generally, you can use almost any type of container as long as there is

  1. Enough room for the plant;
  2. Enough space to add drainage;
  3. The ability to drain evenly; and
  4. Is not made of a material that poses a threat because it might "leech" chemicals into the soil and then into the plant.

This book is aimed at an inexperienced gardeners with a limited space. The information on the topic of container gardening is very basic and most of it can be easily found by searching the internet. Quite a bit of space in this book is wasted on listing positives of growing vegetables and explaining what photosynthesis is. Those sections felt to me like the author was just trying to expand the length of the book with common sense basics to make the book look more substantial than it is.

Good stuff!
Not horrible. It can find most of the info on the internet.
It's full of information. I needed ideas to see if this is really something I want to do.
Fair book
I gave this book as a gift, and my father seemed to really enjoy it. He and my mom garden regularly, but were thinking about doing more container-type stuff at home instead of having to go to their community garden plot all the time. This book is clearly illustrated and has great descriptions of how to do things. It's for beginners and experienced garndeners as well!
This book is an excellent read for a novice gardener looking to get some tips on how to ensure more success when container gardening. There is a lot of information here, but it never feels like you're being overwhelmed with too much information. It has lots of little tips and tricks to ensure that you won't feel disappointed or disheartened by your first attempt at container gardening, and it has useful reference tables that you can return to again and again!
I bought the book to see if it was any good for true beginners, ( my 9 and
7 year old granddaughters). It is plain enough for them to follow, successfully. It is encouraging for the beginner to have a usable dig guide to follow, and gives me hope that they will be able to do it without waiting for me to visit.
