As I am an avid reader, I have different 'favorite' books for different times. Sunny days require one type of book, rainy days often another, and so forth. There are moments when I need a heart-stopping thriller to have me on the edge of my seat, as I panic until the ending is resolved. Then there are the books that are like a warm cup of hot chocolate on a chilly day...enjoyable and refreshing. That is what Dogwood Alley is.

It's fun and easy to read with a great set of characters to follow. There is just the right mix of historical facts alongside the story of a wonderful group of people that will make you laugh, cry, and just plain smile as you read.

I also loved that my friend stayed true to her spiritual beliefs as it is filtered into the story in an inviting way. I recommend this book as you will find yourself returning to it over and over to see what's happening on...Dogwood Alley.

Dogwood Alley Volume 1 Alyssa Helton 9781519584427 Books Reviews

If you are from East Tennessee, you will find this novel quite interesting, especially if you are from around Knoxville. I grew up around Chattanooga, but loved the descriptions of life in the Knoxville area of East Tennessee. The reason for only three stars is that there are many typographical errors in the e-book, and the family names are spelled with an apostrophe in the plural form (Crawford's), instead of the correct form that simply adds an "s." (Crawfords) The writing style also seemed somewhat simple to me at times. I would have enjoyed more detail when certain happenings and events were discussed. All in all, I appreciated the book, and will mention that it parallels events leading to and through World World 2. Faith and trust in God is highlighted in the lives of the Crawfords and Vincents.
Don’t expect a story arc with set points. What this book brings is a collection of vignettes, memories of an age now past. Two families share the tale, with events that vary in depth, some fleeting and seemingly irrelevant. The incidents are strung together with a light hand, leaving the reader with the dogwood equivalent of a daisy chain. Pleasant to read, with a well handled approach to the scriptural element.
For those who were born in the 1930 - 40 era will enjoy reading this book. Author really did her research of factual details and expertly includes them to bring characters to life. Readers may find themselves thinking this is story of someone they know.

This book is one that reader will continue reading when eyes want to close simply because have to know what happens. Can't put book down just when.. you'll have to read it - no spoilers in thisvreview.
When I came across the eBook DOGWOOD ALLEY by Alyssa Helton, I was immediately drawn to the cover illustration, and the name, then the clincher was seeing it was about East Tennessee farm life. It was not until I began to read it, however, that I was wonderfully surprised to find the setting was Knox County--my home area! Dogwood Alley is actually at Solway, Tennessee which is between Knoxville and Oak Ridge, but much of the story events are in Knoxville proper. The Tennessee Theatre, Kimball's Jewelers, Cas Walker's Grocery, et al, are mentioned, and most importantly to the story The Knoxville News-Sentinel. One of the main characters is Bert Vincent, beloved News-Sentinel columnist. Central to the theme is the Dogwood Alley resident Crawford family who had a total of twenty-five children! The timespan for this book-one of the series is early 1930s to just after the end of WWII.

This was one of the best books I've ever read--partially, I'm sure, because of the special locale, but that aside, the writing is excellent and so down to earth. It is a clean, Christian-based story with such good values. I really hope everyone will get this and get to know the Vincent and Crawford families. I liked it so much, I bought book-two as soon as I finished this one and will be enjoying it in a few minutes! I highly recommend DOGWOOD ALLEY by Alyssa Helton! ...5 Stars!
I started out not sure about this book but the characters began to grow on me and being from Kentucky I could relate to their Southern charm and innocence. This book is refreshing . No foul language or sex. It could be called a G rated book.
3.5 stars--it's a "slice of life" novel set in the Great Depression/WWII times. It follows a large farming family--primarily one of the sons and his relationship with a neighbor's daughter. There is also a nurse and a reporter, who eventually marry one another, who become friends with the family through a census in the case of the nurse and a story in the case of the reporter.

The story is quite well told though a bit passive. The author also has not mastered how to make family names plural. For example, I'll use the author's last name. Her family would be the Heltons (not the Helton's. The 's denotes ownership or possession so it would be correct to say Helton's land if you were referring to her land, but if you wanted to refer to family land it would be the Heltons's (or Heltons', depending on which school you subscribe to) land.) The author routinely uses the 's when she wants to indicate more than one person from that family--something I noticed often enough to annoy me.

The ending seemed quite abrupt to me.
Dogwood Alley
Set in the 30s during the depression, the story follows two couples. Burt and Doris are middle class with more professional jobs. Fred and Margaret are a struggling, less educated couple. It's a story of faith and being good to your fellow man.

This would have been an enjoyable story, but the execution of it was so elementary I couldn't appreciate it. At times it even felt as though the author was copying from a periodical or textbook from that era.

Suited for ages 14 and under.
